Blog There are a variety of ways to help The Road Home and the people we serve during the holiday season!
We appreciate your passion for volunteering at The Road Home. We do not offer volunteer opportunities on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, or New Year's Day.
Each December, The Road Home creates a holiday store for families in our shelter and housing programs, Candy Cane Corner. This store gives parents an empowering opportunity to select gifts for their family. We stock the store with new, unwrapped donations from our community. Volunteers are needed throughout December to help sort donations and wrap gifts. Donations of new clothing, toys and household items are needed from early November though December to stock the store.
Candy Cane Corner is currently closed for the season. December 2013 Dates TBD.
Volunteers are also needed the weekend after Thanksgiving to assist with store set-up and the week after Christmas to help with store pack-up.
To help with store set-up or pack-up, please email us at volunteer@theroadhome.org
Online Sign-up for Candy Cane Corner is currently closed. December 2013 Sign-up will be available Nov. 1, 2013.
Groups of 10 or less welcome
Must be at least 16 years old.
The Road Home's 2013 Holiday Radio-a-Thon dates TBD. Nine local radio stations broadcast live from the shelter and encourage listeners to donate in-kind items or make a financial contribution. The donations collected during this lively event help us provide shelter and supportive services year round.

Large groups welcome.
No age limit for volunteers.
The Road Home has a variety of housing programs, including Palmer Court, our permanent supportive housing development. These programs help people step out of homelessness and back into our community. Cleaning kits help individuals and families make the transition back into housing.

Each holiday season, The Road Home & our volunteers assemble a gift bag for each man staying at our shelter. For many, this is the only gift they will receive. Over 700 bags are assembled and given out on Christmas Eve.
Gift bags include:
Full sized hygiene items and other gift bag items should be delivered to The Road Home (210 S. Rio Grande St.) by December 13, 2013 to allow for assembly & holiday distribution.

Gift cards help make the season bright for families and individuals in our housing programs and at our shelter. Gift cards in $5 increments are needed for: grocery stores, gas stations, clothing stores, and restaurants.
